Fort Riley ceremony honors German, Italian POWs

Seventy-three German and Italian prisoners of war were honored for their contributions to Fort Riley during a memorial ceremony at the Fort Riley Cemetery Nov. 18.

The bodies of 62 German and 11 Italian Soldiers, who died as POWs far away from their Families, are buried at Fort Riley. Read more of this post

IACH health, safety specialist shadows fire inspectors

As an occupational health and safety specialist for Irwin Army Community Hospital’s safety office, Melissa Hendrix said she wanted to learn more about the installation, along with fire inspections, fire alarm testing and sprinkler systems.

In order to gain a better understanding of the different types of occupancies and how to inspect each occupancy, Hendrix shadowed members of the Fort Riley Fire and Emergency Services Fire Inspection Branch Nov. 14 to 18. Read more of this post

Projects continue to help schools

Editor’s note: This is the third in a series of articles about the “2012 Homecoming” as Fort Riley prepares for its highest troop level on post since 1994.

Construction projects are underway at Fort Riley to help with the current overcrowding issues in the post schools.

Currently, those projects include the construction of a new elementary school in the Forsyth neighborhood and an addition to Ware Elementary School. Read more of this post

The brigade headquarters, 101st Brigade Support Battalion and Special Troops Battalion were among the units uncasing their colors during the ceremony. Read more of this post

Busch exhibits child-like behavior

Some NASCAR fans may think the “Boys, have at it” decision has gone too far with recent incidents involving the driver of the No. 18 M&Ms Toyota Kyle Busch.

I believe Busch has let his child-like temper tantrums get the best of him in recent races causing him to be parked for the Nationwide and Sprint Cup races at Texas Motor Speedway Nov. 5 and 6. Read more of this post

Ware fifth-graders complete 10-week D.A.R.E. program

Bowen Wilson, Ware Elementary School fifth-grader, is congratulated by the D.A.R.E. lion following the class’ D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony Nov. 18.

More than 100 fifth-grade students at Ware Elementary School completed the 10-week Drug Abuse Resistance Education course with a graduation Nov. 18 in the school gymnasium.

Students were congratulated by Jerry Tenbrink, Kansas state D.A.R.E. coordinator.

Community members visit post during leadership program

Leaders from communities within the Central Flint Hills Region discuss their class project during the Nov. 18 session of the Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program at Riley’s Conference Center.

More than 15 leaders from communities within Geary, Riley and Pottawatomie counties gathered at Riley’s Conference Center Nov. 17 and 18 for the Flint Hills Leadership Program.

Terri Hollenbeck, Crossroads Real Estate and Auction, Wamego, said she wanted to take part in the program because she has always been community involved, but wanted to branch out to a regional level. Read more of this post

FES announces contest winners from fire prevention week

This year, for the 2011 National Fire Protection Association’s, “Protect Your Family From Fire,” Fire Prevention Week activities, the Fort Riley Fire and Emergency Services partnered with the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation to host a poster and essay contest for all schools at Fort Riley.

Winners were selected by a team of DFMWR and FES personnel. First, second and third places were awarded in two categories – kindergarten through second grade and third through fifth grades. Read more of this post
